(\ Message-ID: <1B0A6105-101D-41DE-B6F6-4E3BA995A688@festint.com> N E W S R E L E A S E DES MOINES RENAISSANCE FAIRE "The Renaissance of Des Moines' Culture & Development" The City of Des Moines has reason to celebrate it's recent growth and inner-city enhancements. Not only could this decade have been called the "renaissance" of the metro area's expansion into more business, cultural, educational and arts facilities -- it even brought us our own festival to celebrate annually this "rebirth" of the city. The DES MOINES RENAISSANCE FAIRE started in 2004, but it wasn't until 2006 that this unique event was established in its permanent setting. More so, the added features through each of these years are only now gaining the admiration and attention of folks around the region. Hidden behind a wall of trees adjacent to Sleepy Hollow Sports Park, this colorful re-creation of a merry olde English castle town is called Canterbury-on-Sherwood. Within it's 15 acres it showcases one of the largest castles in the Midwest, two feasting halls, a jousting arena, a children's realm and puppet stage, a faerie court treehouse, thirty quaint merchant shops, fourteen food & beverage pavilions, a 'Sherwood Forest' living history realm, hand-powered rides, stalls for games of skill, an archery range, a pony ride trail, flush toilets, a pirate ship as a stage, six other seating areas for entertainment, crafts demonstration spaces, an impressive three-tower gate entrance, and a custom built 85-foot bridge that brings you from the parking lot into this amazing world of fun & learning. This year the over-all site has been dubbed Festival Park, and will also be used in October for an expanded Halloween park. "Last year we had hundreds of pleased visitors coming in from out- of-state, while our surveys show that there are still thousands of people right here in Des Moines who don't even know we exist," laments producer-director Gregory Schmidt. Schmidt's family lives in Clear Lake, but has seen two neighbors move to Des Moines, recently. "If they move to Des Moines, they just become part of our extended family," he points out. "The festival grows as the city grows." What really makes this three-weekend event unique is that it features some twenty professional performing troupes who come in from all over the country. Some of the stand-out headliners perform comedy Shakespeare, magic, comedy juggling, Madrigal music, stage combat, commedia dell'arte theater, classical theater, period dance, and an array of historical characters. There are as many as 250 costumed village cast members to cheer up the public. Plus, it's thirty-five artisan merchants sell hand-made items and collector souvenirs that you can't find anywhere else. The three weekends of the "Des Moines Renaissance Faire" (Sept. 5/6/7, 12/13, 19/20) are distinctly different via it's variety of themes: (#1) 'Highland Fling - Kilts & Celts' (#2) 'Royal Romance - Favors & Flavors' (#3) 'Buccaneer Pirates - Treasure & Pleasure'. The festival gates are open from 10:00am to 6:00pm, daily. Schmidt and his production team are hoping that more metro area acting companies and arts groups will participate at the festival in the future. Admission is $16 for adults, $8 for ages 5-12, under 5 free, adult two-day passes are $23, and season passes are $30. (All of these prices already include sales tax.) More detailed information can be found at www.dmrenfaire.com or by contacting greg at festint.com. Local inquiries can be done via 515-262-4100 or www.sleepyhollowsportspark.com. *Gregory Schmidt is proposing that the 2009 DES MOINES RENAISSANCE FAIRE be used as a city-wide celebration for the official ending of the region's economic recession. September is the expected bottom of the financial decline, and the festival is being used to kick-off "good times ahead." -30- CONTACTS: Festival contact - Greg Schmidt 641-357-5177 greg at festint.com Site contact - Max Kenkel 515-262-4100 mxknkl at yahoo.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
