It's a complete merry olde English castle town, known as Canterbury-on-Sherwood; and it hosts one of the most popular events in the region -- the annual Des Moines Renaissance Faire. This year, as always, the festival runs on the first three weekends of September but this time with an August 31st start. With seven days of Medieval/Renaissance fun, including Labor Day monday, this 11th installment of the growing faire runs from 10am to 6pm on August 31st/Sept. 1st & 2nd, 7th & 8th, 14th & 15th. Even without the staggering number of professional performers, edutainers, re-enactors and stage show headliners from around the country, the setting alone is worth a visit. It features an entrance bridge over a river moat, a tower gateway and main street plaza, one of the largest castles in the midwest, an equestrian jousting arena, a children's play realm with faerie treehouse, a pony ride corral, a feasting hall, a tavern, a wine villa, numerous food shops, colorful merchant shops, a living history realm with public archery range, a skills game zone, gazebos, fountains, photo-op landscaping and eight theatrical stages for entertainment. With each weekend offering a different theme it becomes a three-festivals-in-one experience. "Knights, Barbarians & Heroes" (Aug. 31/Sept. 1st & 2nd) brings back numerous regulars such as Joust Evolution and Warwick, but also three premiere shows never before seen in Des Moines. One of which is a much touted "Punch & Judy" show by the Jester Puppets, which earned a 'Best New Show' recognition. "Scots, Britons & Irish" (Sept. 7/8th) follows with nationally touring Celtic tavern trio 3 Pints Gone, the Sons of the Mist comedy swordplay and the hilarious Mad Scotsmen's Golf Challenge. The Highland bagpipes will herald in an accompanying village of characters and various stage shows for all age interests. "Pirates, Scallywags & Buccaneers" (Sept. 14/15th) concludes the festivities with the swashbuckling Bawdy Buccaneers and the mesmerizing Blue Rose Mermaid. The castle lawn will also be taken over by the living history Medieval and Renaissance Society with their inter-active village museum. On average there will be 45 scheduled stage shows per day presented by fifteen professional show troupes from around the Midwest and a village cast of some 250 enchanting characters. The food court and tavern have brought to central Iowa one of the most Facebook 'liked' novelty food and libations encounters tallied. Many tastes from full hot meal plates to gourmet desserts can be found in the 20 food and drink shops. The vast array of shopping available at only a Renaissance festival can be found through-out the numerous quaint shops and open market stalls. This runs the gamut of artisan goods from custom-designed jewelry and glassware to ceramics and hand-crafted weapons. The Des Moines Renaissance Faire is specifically designed to appeal to all age groups with various activities and presentations geared to all levels of interest from fantasy fun to authentic history. Admission is $16 for adults and $8 for kids from 5 to 13 with a $25 two-day pass and a $35 all-season pass. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance gate during faire hours.
